Cricket Hill Brewery: An Unexpected Surprise

What do you do when you’ve got your heart set on visiting a New Jersey winery… but traffic has other plans?

You pivot. And you still sip local.

The fiancé and I were all set to check a new-to-us winery off our list. The only catch? Living in northern New Jersey means most wineries are about an hour away on a good day. Add in an unusual spike in traffic, and suddenly our one-hour drive turned into an hour and 47 minutes. That wasn’t happening. But we weren’t giving up on supporting local.

Enter: Cricket Hill Brewery

Tucked inside one of Fairfield’s many industrial complexes — just about two minutes off Route 46 — sits Cricket Hill Brewery.

We honestly didn’t know what to expect. Industrial park breweries can go either way. But after having such a positive experience at Cape May Brewing Company in the past, we were hopeful.

Fabulous Rhythm Aces playing some great tunes.

Guess what? It delivered.

Flights, Live Music & A Relaxed Vibe

We grabbed two tasting flights and settled in while a local cover band played in the background. No cover charge. No pretension. Just good beer and a welcoming crowd. The vibe felt familiar — the same sense of community we love at New Jersey wineries.

Beers That Surprised This Wine Lover

Abbey Cherry Tripel

This was my fiancé’s pick. Dark fruit notes, smooth finish, and dangerously easy to drink. Honestly? A fantastic crossover beer for wine lovers who appreciate rich fruit character.

Milkman

This one was mine. A dark, creamy stout layered with chocolate and coffee flavors. So delicious. Perfect for colder nights when you want something with depth and comfort in every sip.

Hopnotic IPA (Yes… an IPA!)

Full confession: I’m not an IPA guy. But I tried Cricket Hill’s Hopnotic anyway. And I was blown away. Grapefruit on the palate with a sharp, clean bite. Bright. Balanced. Memorable. It may not convert me fully to the IPA side… but it definitely earned my respect.

Enjoying Milkman as I watch folks dancing.

A Conversation About Hops

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting Jeff, one of the owners. We talked about how hops dictate flavor — how subtle shifts in variety and timing can dramatically change a beer’s character.

Sound familiar? It’s not all that different from how grape varietals and winemaking decisions shape the final expression in your glass. Different beverage. Same craftsmanship.

Why We’ll Be Back

  • Great beer.
  • Close to home.
  • Friendly atmosphere.
  • Live music.
  • Rotating tap list with new brews weekly.

That combination makes Cricket Hill Brewery a spot we’ll return to again and again. Sometimes the best local experiences happen when plans change.
