When the First Warm Days Call for Wine
There’s something magical about the first truly beautiful day after a long winter. The sun feels warmer, the air smells a little fresher, and suddenly the idea of spending the afternoon at a winery sounds like the perfect plan.
Last weekend gave us exactly that kind of day.
With hints of spring finally arriving, the fiancé and I decided to take a short ride over the state line into New York. Our destination? A winery we had been wanting to visit in the Hudson Valley AVA.
That destination was Torne Valley Vineyards in Hillburn, New York. And let me tell you — it turned out to be the perfect place to kick off the start of the spring wine tasting season.
A Winery That Feels Like a Getaway
If you’ve never visited Torne Valley Vineyards, it’s more than just a tasting room.

The property offers a full experience, including:
- A guided tasting room
- A full restaurant menu
- Indoor dining
- Outdoor seating
- Seasonal live music and events
It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an entire afternoon relaxing with good food, good wine, and great company. And that’s exactly what we did.
Sunshine, Sangria, and a Perfect Porch
We started our visit outside on a closed-in porch that offered the best of both worlds. The space let us enjoy the sunshine and fresh air while still giving us protection from the occasional gust of late-winter wind. It was the perfect balance between cozy and open.

To kick things off:
- The fiancé ordered a glass of sangria
- I went with a Gewürztraminer
Both were refreshing choices for a sunny afternoon and paired perfectly with the relaxed vibe of the day.
Lunch That Was Almost Impossible to Choose
One thing that quickly stood out was the menu. There were so many options, and honestly, everything sounded amazing. If I’m being honest, I briefly considered ordering half the menu. Sadly, my stomach reminded me that limits exist.

After much internal debate, I landed on:
- Grilled chicken panini
- Shrimp tacos
Both were absolutely delicious.
The panini was warm, savory, and satisfying, while the shrimp tacos brought a lighter, flavorful balance to the table. Paired with wine and sunshine, it made for a fantastic lunch.
Time for the Wine Tasting
After lunch, it was time for what we came for — the tasting room experience.
Inside, we were greeted by our host Kimmie, who guided us through a wonderful lineup of wines produced by Torne Valley Vineyards.
One interesting detail we learned during the tasting was that while there are some vines on the property, many of the grapes used to produce their wines come from vineyards located in the Finger Lakes AVA.
Naturally, this got my wine nerd brain thinking. Were we tasting wines from the Hudson Valley? Or technically from the Finger Lakes? In the end, the answer didn’t really matter. The wines were delicious either way.

Splitting Flights: Whites vs Reds
Each tasting flight included five wines, which made for a great sampling experience.
We decided to split things up:
- The fiancé ordered a red flight
- I went for a white flight
Naturally, we shared the whites first before moving on to the reds. Because that’s just good wine tasting teamwork.

Our Favorite Wines of the Day
With so many great options, narrowing down favorites wasn’t easy. But a few definitely stood out.
The Fiancé’s Favorite
Her standout wine of the day was the Traminette. This aromatic white grape often brings floral and spicy characteristics, and this version delivered beautifully.
My Red Wine Debate
For me, the biggest decision came down to two wines:
- Cabernet Franc
- Kimmie’s Kiss (a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon)
Both were excellent, but one ended up winning for a pretty cool reason.

The Story Behind “Kimmie’s Kiss”
In the end, I brought home a bottle of Kimmie’s Kiss.
Not only was the wine fantastic, but it turns out our tasting guide, Kimmie, actually played a role in creating the original blend. How cool is that?
When you meet the person behind a wine — especially someone who helped shape it — it makes the experience even more memorable. So naturally, that bottle had to come home with us.
Outdoor Events and Summer Vibes
Another thing worth mentioning about Torne Valley Vineyards is their outdoor patio area.
During the warmer months, the winery hosts:
- Live music
- Outdoor events
- Seasonal gatherings
After seeing the layout of the property, I can only imagine how lively and fun the place becomes once summer rolls in. It’s definitely on our list for a return visit.
Final Thoughts on Torne Valley Vineyards
What started as a simple sunny-day outing turned into a fantastic winery experience. Between the food, the welcoming atmosphere, the knowledgeable staff, and the impressive wines, Torne Valley Vineyards delivered on every level.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you why winery visits are so enjoyable. You slow down, enjoy the moment, and discover new wines along the way. And with spring just starting to arrive, it felt like the perfect way to kick off the season.

Plan Your Visit
If you’re exploring wineries in the Hudson Valley, Torne Valley Vineyards is absolutely worth adding to your list. Great wine, great food, and a beautiful setting make it an easy recommendation.
