Weekly Wine Review: Cedar Rose Viognier Shows Why New Jersey White Wine Deserves Attention
There are some bottles you open expecting to enjoy, and then there are bottles you revisit that remind you why you bought them in the first place. This week’s Weekly Wine Review falls into that second category.
This review takes a closer look at a 2023 Viognier from Cedar Rose Vineyards, a bottle we picked up during a winter visit to the winery after a tasting with Dustin. It made an impression then, and after revisiting it this week, it still does.
As I continue exploring New Jersey wine, one thing that stands out is how much quality and variety there is beyond the more familiar regional grapes. This bottle is a good example of that.

A Return to a Memorable Bottle
We brought this Viognier home after a tasting at Cedar Rose Vineyards, knowing it was a wine worth spending more time with.
That return visit through the bottle gave us the chance to slow down, focus a bit more on tasting, and put together more thoughtful notes. Sometimes a second look tells you even more than a first impression, and that was certainly the case here.
Tasting Notes: Aromatic and Balanced
Viognier is often known for its aromatic character, and this one immediately leaned into that strength.
On the Nose
The aromatics were expressive right away, offering:
- Apricot
- Lemon
- Honey
There was a freshness to the fruit, along with a soft floral quality that made the wine inviting from the first pour.
On the Palate
This is a dry white wine, but it brings more texture than some drinkers might expect.
The first sip showed:
- Bright lemon-driven acidity
- A pleasant acidic grip
- Smooth texture
- A subtle buttery note on the finish
That combination worked well. The acidity kept the wine lively, while the texture gave it enough weight to make it interesting. Though technically light-bodied, it carried itself with a little more presence than that description alone might suggest.

What Is Viognier?
If you are new to Viognier, it is a white grape variety originally associated with France’s Rhône Valley. It is known for producing aromatic wines that often show notes of stone fruit, citrus, flowers, and sometimes a richer, almost creamy texture.
That combination can make Viognier an interesting bridge for drinkers who enjoy crisp whites but want something with a bit more body and depth.
And increasingly, it is proving to be a grape worth watching in New Jersey vineyards as well.
Food Pairing Ideas
One of the things I liked most about this wine is how versatile it feels at the table.
It should pair well with:
- Grilled salmon
- Light white fish dishes
- Roast or grilled chicken
- Spring salads
- Mild creamy cheeses
That said, we enjoyed this bottle on its own, and it worked perfectly well as a stand-alone sipping wine. Not every bottle needs food to show well, and this was one of them.

A Strong Example of New Jersey White Wine
New Jersey reds often get attention, and rightly so, but bottles like this are a reminder that the state’s white wines deserve serious attention too.
This Viognier felt polished, balanced, and thoughtfully made. It delivered varietal character, had enough structure to stay interesting, and remained approachable from first sip to last. That combination is not always easy to pull off.
Final Thoughts
This week’s Weekly Wine Review confirms what we thought when we first tasted it: this is a very enjoyable bottle and a strong example of New Jersey Viognier.
If you are exploring local wines and want to branch out beyond Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, this is a bottle worth seeking out.
